(LEWISTON, Idaho) -- Pilots flying into a number of airports, including Lewiston-Bez Perce County Regional Airport, will have to be much more careful if the federal budget cuts remain in place beyond March 31.
According to the Idaho Stateman, the Lewiston airport's control tower will shut down and potentially lock its doors by the end of the day on March 31 because of those pesky spending cuts. The Lewiston tower is one of five in the state of Idaho that would be shut down.
Pilots flying into those airports would be "on their own," according to the Statesman. Because no nearby airports have radar in the area, pilots would have to communicate directly with each other in order to avoid issues on approach.
Wendy Fredrickson, manager of the Lewiston airport, told the Statesman that the she was concerned about the safety of the airport if the tower is not open.
Airport management has sent a number of questions to the Federal Aviation Administration in order to clarify what will happen if the shutdown does occur.
