Woman Arrested on Felony Burglary Charges

(BOISE, Idaho) -- Boise Police arrested a woman on felony burglary charges after a retail store robbery on Wednesday.

Officers responded to the store at approximately 1:30 p.m. Wednesday where employees had detained the suspect, 22-year-old Olivia Stevig.

Employees told police that they witnessed the suspect taking six DVDs and leaving the store without paying. Officers believe Stevig entered the store with the intent of stealing the movies, resulting in a felony charge.

The suspect is being held at Ada County Jail.

Man Arrested After Child's Death

(BOISE, Idaho) -- A man was arrested Thursday morning on suspicion of causing serious injuries to a 22-month-old boy.

Police were called to a Mountain Home residence by paramedics Tuesday afternoon with concerns about the injuries suffered by the young child. The child was unresponsive, according to the Idaho Statesman.

Paramedics took the child to Saint Luke's Boise Medical Center for treatment, but the boy died Wednesday morning as a result of apparent trauma, says the Statesman.

Laubach wasbooked into Ada County Jail and is currently being held on $500,000 bond.

Otter Asks Energy Dept. to Finance Idaho National Lab Clean-Up

(BOISE, Idaho) -- Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter called on the U.S. Department of Energy on Thursday to finance the court-required cleanup work at the Idaho National Laboratory, even though the federal government faces budget problems.

“Recognizing that there will be some fiscal impact to the INL as a result of the sequestration or other holdbacks, I strongly urge the DOE to continue meeting the cleanup milestones pursuant to Idaho’s 1995 Settlement Agreement,” Governor Otter wrote in a letter to Deputy Energy Secretary Daniel Poneman. “Of particular importance to the state is the continued and sustained progress on the exhumation of buried waste. I cannot adequately underscore the importance of meeting these particular goals.”

Otter added, “I strongly believe that in times of sustained reductions in discretionary spending, the federal government can and should consolidate its nuclear work in Idaho. To this end, the state would welcome an ongoing and continued dialogue with DOE to ensure these assets are put to their highest and best use.”

Man Arrested After Drugs Found During Traffic Stop

(BOISE, Idaho) -- A man was arrested Thursday night after a traffic stop lead to a search of his car.

Jacob Beutler, 22, was pulled over after he allegedly made an improper lane change at approximately 9 p.m. When police checked his records, they found that he had had his driving privileges suspended.

When police approached the vehicle, a K9 unit allegedly detected the presence of drugs. Officers then inspected the vehicle and found a syringe and a baggie containing a small amount of methamphetamine.

Beutler was booked at Ada County Jail on charges of possession of a controlled substance, driving without privileges, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Former Prison Officer Jailed for Sex with Inmate

(BOISE, Idaho) -- A former prison officer was arrested after an investigation into alleged inappropriate conduct involving at least one inmate.

Roberto Guiller Escobedo, 30, worked at the Idaho Department of Correction for over two years before being terminated in January, says to the Idaho Statesman.

The investigation into Escobedo's conduct was initiated by the Department of Correction's Office of Professional Standards and later turned over to the Ada County Sheriff's Office.

According to the Statesman, Escobedo was charged on Monday with two counts of sexual contact with a prisoner, a felony with a maximum sentence of life in prison. He was booked into Ada County Jail on Thursday.

Cops Bust Woman with Meth in Presence of Child

(BOISE, Idaho) -- A Boise woman was arrested over the weekend, after allegedly being busted with a quantity of meth at a local home.

Boise Police said that on Saturday around 9 p.m. officers responded to a home on the 500 block of South Dalson Lane following a report of a disturbance. At the scene, officers spotted approximately 28 grams of meth in plain view, a police report stated. The meth was reportedly found to be within the reach of a child under the age of five.

Police arrested Stacie Fitzpatrick, 26, charging her with possession of meth with intent to deliver, injury to a child and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The child has been placed in the custody of the Idaho State Department of Health and Welfare.

Police Arrest Man on Felony Burglary Charges

(BOISE, Idaho) -- Police arrested a 74-year-old man on burglary charges over the weekend.

Officers responded to a report of a theft at a retail store in the 8300 block of West Overland Saturday at about 7 p.m. Employees told police that they saw a suspect select several items and then leave the store without paying for them. Police believe the suspect entered the store with the intent to commit the theft, which resulted in a felony burglary charge.

Aloysius L. Lipetzky was arrested and booked at the Ada County Jail.

Police Arrest 45-Year-Old Woman for DUI

(BOISE, Idaho) -- Police arrested a 45-year-old woman on suspicion of driving under the influence Saturday night.

Officers observed a vehicle that was not staying within its lane at about 9 p.m. and stopped the driver at Denton and Cole Road. A police report states the suspect, identified as Lisa J. Klingelhoets, who appeared to be very intoxicated at the time, failed several sobriety tests and blew a .13/.13 at the Ada County Jail. Boise City Records indicated she had prior convictions for DUI, which made the current charge a felony.

Klingelhoets was booked at the Ada County Jail on a felony driving under the influence charge.

Two Suspects Arrested in String of Vandalism Acts

(BOISE, Idaho) -- Boise Police have arrested two suspects in connection with a string of vandalism acts in local neighborhoods.

Police say the incidents started occurring around three weeks ago, with residents reporting broken windows on parked vehicles, homes and other targets either late at night or early in the morning.

Investigators believe the suspects mainly used slingshots and steel marbles to cause an estimated  $30,000 in damage to vehicles and property.

Police have arrested Devon Anderson, 21, and Tyler Bartlet, 20, in connection with the crimes. They're both charged with felony malicious injury to property.

Governor Announces Emmett to Host Next 'Capital for a Day'

(BOISE, Idaho) -- Gov. Butch Otter announced Monday that Emmett will host the next Capital for a Day on Wednesday, March 27.

The governor brings state government to Idahoans who live outside the Boise area each month by making a different Idaho town the "Capital for a Day." The meetings provide local residents an opportunity to have open discussions about government issues with the governor, his cabinet and other senior state officials, Otter said in a news release.

The next event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Emmett-Carberry Intermediate School in Emmett.

Two Men Arrested for Allegedly Smoking Oxycodone in Parked Car

(BOISE, Idaho) -- Two men were arrested for allegedly smoking oxycodone in a parked car late Monday afternoon.

An officer saw two suspects hunched over in the front of a car in a parking lot in the 300 block of N. Milwaukee St. and was concerned the pair was using drugs. An officer approached the car and contacted 21-year-old Cody A. Bellenbrock in the driver's seat. According to a police report, the officer received consent to search the car and located four oxycodone pills in the driver's area and another in the suspect's clothing. As the officer made contact with Bellebrock and 19-year-old Joshua N. Osborne, who was also in the car, both suspects were found to be in possesssion and smoking the drug, the report states.

Bellenbrock and Osborne were arrested and booked on charges of controlled substance violation, a felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor. Bellenbrock was additionally charged with a probation violation.

Drug Dealers Arrested After Smoking Marijuana in Handicap Space

(BOISE, Idaho) -- Two men were arrested on Tuesday morning after they parked in a handicap spot to smoke marijuana with a car full of bath salts.

Scott J. Rambo, 48, and Samuel G. Taylor, 20, were spotted shortly after midnight on Tuesday morning parked in a handicap spot outside a convenience store by an officer who noticed that they had no visible handicap placard. The officer approached the truck and found Taylor smoking marijuana in the passenger seat. Rambo came out of the store shortly afterwards.

Rambo was found to be driving with a suspended license. Officers called for a drug sniffing dog, and found numerous drugs and drug paraphernalia in the car, including cocaine and 21 grams of bath salts that Rambo had intended to sell.

The two suspects were booked into the Ada County Jail. The investigation is ongoing.

Boise Man Accused of Stabbing Friend at Dog Park

(BOISE, Idaho) -- A Boise man was arrested on Tuesday after police say he stabbed his friend during a dispute.

Speaking from a local hospital, the victim told officers that on Tuesday evening he met up with William J. Roberts, 45, at a dog park on Roosevelt near Latah, and there was a confrontation over an ongoing dispute.

Police said at some point Roberts stabbed the victim with a knife, resulting in the victim having to be hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Roberts was then taken into custody and charged with felony aggravated battery.

Boise Neighborhood Watch Director Retires, Successor Gets to Work

(BOISE, Idaho) -- Charlene Miller, the director of the Boise Police Crime Prevention Neighborhood Watch, retired Wednesday at a ceremony at City Hall West.

Miller, an 18-year veteran of the Boise Police Department, is retiring to spend more time with her family and to work on personal projects.

"Working at Boise Police Department has been a privilege,” Miller said, “and when giving presentations in the community I’ve considered it an honor to represent BPD and serve the citizens of Boise."

Set to replace Miller is Carrie Demirelli, formerly the Police Department Child and Teen Safety program director. She has 20 years of experience on the force.

Woman Charged with Sexual Battery of a Minor

(BOISE, Idaho) -- A 27-year-old female suspect was arrested on Tuesday and is charged with sexual battery of a minor child, aged 16 or 17.

Amanda R. Sheets is accused of being involved in illegal sexual acts with the victim that took place at a West Boise home on January 9, 2012, according to the Boise Police Department.

The incident was reported to the police by a third party on March 9, and a detailed investigation led to Sheet’s arrest.

Boise Ranked Fifth Most Unhealthy County in Idaho

(BOISE) -- Boise ranked low in a new study that measured and ranked how healthy Idaho counties were, The Idaho Statesman reports.

Boise ranked placed 40th out of 44 counties. Madison County won the title of Idaho’s healthiest.

The study by researchers at the University of Wisconsin and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation used numerous factors to measure how healthy Idaho counties are. Mortality, morbidity, and obesity rates were measured, along with smoking and drinking habits and social and economic factors.

Dave Fotsch, a public information officer for Central District Health Department told The Idaho Statesman that the rankings are “a way to start the conversation about what makes a healthy community."

"We know it's an imperfect tool," he added.

Two Arrested After Using Backhoe to Steal Scrap Metal

(BOISE, Idaho) -- Two Boise men were arrested after they were caught stealing scrap metal from an industrial facility with a backhoe on Thursday, according to a Boise Police Department press release.

Police arrived at the industrial facility located on South Apple Street just after midnight on Thursday morning. An employee told the officers that he had seen two men using a backhoe to pick up scrap metal, take it over the facility fence, and load it into their vehicle.

Police found Brandy C. Helland, 50, in the vehicle nearby and arrested him. Andrew Helland, 28, was found at a residence shortly afterwards. Both men were taken to the Ada County Jail.

The two face grand theft charges.

New Idaho State Police Director Named

(BOISE, Idaho) -- Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter appointed Lieutenant Colonel Ralph Powell to serve as the new director of the Idaho State Police (ISP) on Thursday.

Powell, a 30-year ISP veteran, has been acting Idaho State Police Director since Colonel Jerry Russell retired in January from the position.

“I appreciate the opportunity Governor Otter has given me to continue my service to the citizens of Idaho,” Colonel Powell said. “I look forward to our continued effort in building positive working relationships with our law enforcement counterparts throughout the state.”

Man Who Killed Monkey at Boise Zoo Pleads Guilty

(BOISE, Idaho) -- A man accused of killing a monkey while visiting the Boise Zoo in November pled guilty on Thursday, according to The Idaho Statesman.

Michael J. Watkins pled guilty to the charges of attempted grand theft and animal cruelty after he killed one of the zoo’s Patas monkeys.

Watkins, 22, told police that he was trying to set the monkey free when the incident happened on November 17. A friend of Watkins told police that Watkins was actually just trying to steal the monkey. In any case, the monkey began to attack Watkins, prompting him to beat it to death with a stick.

Watkins was drunk at the time.

He faces up to seven years in prison for the attempted grand theft charge, and six months for the animal cruelty charge. His defense will argue for less.

Shoplifter Allegedly Had Meth in Pockets

(BOISE, Idaho) -- Two people were arrested on Friday after shoplifting, and during the investigation police found that one of the suspects allegedly had methamphetamines in her pockets.

The police were called to arrest Astraiah J. Armstrong, 22, and Alayjah Armstrong, 18, after the two were seen concealing and stealing merchandise from a retail store on North Milwaukee Street around 3 p.m.

Police located the two and recovered the stolen items, including shoes and earrings.

At one point, Astraiah Armstrong took her hands out of her pockets and several used syringes accidently fell out. Police detected meth residue on the syringes, and charged her with possession of a controlled substance. Alayjah was charged with petty theft.
