(HOMEDALE, Idaho) -- A woman who allegedly killed her 2-year-old daughter and then burned her body in a barrel was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Thursday.
In April, Veronica Thea Herrera pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of her 2-year-old daughter Nakita.
Herrera was also charged with destruction of evidence, injury to a child, failure to report a death, and persuading her children to help her burn Nakita’s body, the Idaho Statesman reports.
In Aug. 2012, Herrera turned herself into the police, telling the authorities Nakita died from jumping off a chair and hitting her head.
In court, it was found that Nakita was tortured and abused before her death. The Statesman reports Herrera admitted to burning Naita's body.
Officials determined Herrera burned Nakita's body for two days and forced her older children who were 12, 9, 8, and 3, to feed the flames, according to the Statesman.
Herrera will have to serve 15 years before she is eligible for parole.
