(BOISE, Idaho) -- Officials are scheduled to set fire to Boise State University's Alumni Center on Monday to help break ground for a new building.

The Boise Fire Department will conduct a controlled burn of the existing center to serve as a training exercise for current firefighters, as well as to remove the establishment to make room for the new facility.

“Live fire training isn’t optional; it’s an essential exercise for our firefighters to hone their skills for structure fire related incidents," Boise Fire Department Chief Dennis Doan said in a statement.

The fire department is currently relying on donated buildings for such training events, Doan added.

The exercise will begin early in the day, with the "major burndown" of the building scheduled for 3 p.m., according to officials.

Closures will be in effect on South Grant Avenue between University and Belmont from 7 a.m. Monday until the early evening, along with a partial road closure on South Denver Avenue between 2:30 p.m. and the early evening hours.
